Library Matters – Gear Up for a Great Summer Getaway!
by Molly McKenney, Reference Librarian
I’ve gotten some feedback lately that our travel book section was lacking enough books for certain areas, particularly in locations that have become hot in recent years, like Iceland, Vietnam, and the US National Parks. Also, I’d noticed that many of the travel series that the library subscribed to were not publishing as frequently as in the past (or in some cases not at all).
The time was at hand to do a full scale re-evaluation of the whole section. I went through each destination systematically, got rid of books that were too old to be useful and placed new orders where I felt it was needed. The end result is dozens of new titles on the shelves just in time for summer travel season. The library is now prepared to support all your travel needs! (Well, maybe not ALL of them…)
While we’re on the subject of traveling, I’m a big fan of making sure I have enough reading material on vacation, but sometimes it’s hard to find enough room in my luggage to fit everything I know I might want to read (especially once I’ve packed my sparkling brand new travel books from the library). Luckily, as of May 15th, all the library’s ebooks are now in one convenient place–cloudLibrary (formerly known as 3M cloudLibrary). They’re also searchable in the regular BCCLS catalog, although I recommend using the app. I’m available to give instruction to anyone who needs a little assistance–just bring your device into the library and I’m happy to help!
For those who don’t have their own device, the library also lends out Kindle Paperwhites with lots of the latest popular books preloaded. They’re great for the beach or that long plane ride, or if you just don’t want to wait for your hold on that super popular title to come in.
Last but not least, make sure you get credit for all these wonderful books you’re reading (or listening to) by joining the Adult Summer Reading Club. It promises to be even bigger and better than last year!
